A holiday experience like no other: Vintner Wonderland at Renault Winery

Renault Winery is once again hosting its “Vintner Wonderland,” transforming the 5-acre front lawn of the Egg Harbor winery into a festive village, complete with an ice rink, heated huts, fire pits, a food truck, warm drinks, sparkly lights and a pond.

With crafty vendors selling unique holiday gifts and weekly events planned throughout the season, Vintner Wonderland offers the perfect day out for the whole family.

“My husband and I had this incredible experience when we lived in Europe for four years,’’ recalled Melanie McCallen, the winery’s chief creative officer. “The towns had winter markets where all the townspeople would come together. There were little huts, fire pits, and hot drinks. So, we said, ‘Let’s create this beautiful village experience so that people are outside and happy.’’

The ever-expanding village is now open Fridays through Sundays, running through the end of February . The village operates seven days a week from Dec. 19 to Jan. 2, 2023, when children are on winter break.

Making the Vintner Wonderland family-friendly was vital to its success and a top goal of the McCallen’s who have 10 children — yes, 10 — ages 2 to 22.

“My goal is always to make a beautiful wine experience, but also to make it a family-friendly experience,’’ said McCallen, whose husband, Josh, is the winery’s CEO.

The Vintner Wonderland coincides with the vintner season, McCallen said, explaining that vintner is the term used to refer to a wine maker. She calls this part of the process “magic.’’

“The harvest is finished, and the vintner is working its magic, creating our incredible wine,’’ McCallen said.

A centerpiece of the village is the vintage Christmas tree – made from 70 wine barrels. Louie’s Lounge, named after vineyard founder and French native Louie Renault, is complete with a wine bar, comfy couches, and cheesy snacks that pair perfectly with the wine, all located a stone’s throw from the rink so parents can relax while the little ones swirl around the rink.

Two of the winery’s venues – Taste 1864 and the Renault Wine and Beer Garden — have recently introduced new seasonal menus that are sure to please the palate. Renault’s in-house Santa Claus reads stories to the children in one of the winery’s historic rooms and shares breakfast with kids on various dates in December. Visitors can also sample coffees, wine-infused cupcakes, and other baked goods inside Café La Fleur, Renault’s Parisian café.

The Vintner Express tractor ride takes visitors on historical tours of the vineyard – the second oldest in the United States. Families can even get a little holiday shopping done, with vendors selling unique wares and Renault-related gifts, like candles made from wine bottles, on sale. Skate rentals are also available.

Another family favorite at Renault is “Noon Year’s Eve,’’ held on Dec. 31, when families can ring in the New Year together and still be home for dinner.

The Vintner Wonderland theme is infused throughout this historic winery, which has produced legendary American champagne and fine wines for 158 years. Several restaurants serving artisanal cuisine, a wine and beer garden, 12 event venues, and the newly renovated Château Renault accommodating overnight guests are decked out for the holiday season. Overnight packages are offered during Vintner Wonderland, and live entertainment is served on the weekends.
