At New Jersey Orthopaedic Institute (McInerney Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Institute), professional, Olympic and world-class athletes have access to cutting-edge research and superb operative and nonoperative care.

Dr. Vincent K. McInerney

Dr. Vincent K. McInerney graduated summa cum laude from Saint Peter’s University, Jersey City and from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School with honors. After completing his orthopaedic surgery residency at Seton Hall University / St. Joseph’s Health training program, he became one of the first Sports Medicine Fellows at Massachusetts General Hospital / Harvard Medical School trained by Bertram Zarins and Carter Rowe. While in Boston, Dr. McInerney worked with the Boston Bruins and New England Patriots, in Dr. Henry Mankin’s Cartilage Lab, and at MIT developing neuromuscular training methods.

In 1982, Dr. McInerney returned to New Jersey as one of the first sports medicine and arthroscopy fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeons in the state. He has served as an Assistant Dean, Professor and Chairman, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Director of Sports Medicine and Athletic Training at Seton Hall University School of Health and Medical Sciences. He served as the program director, Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Training Program at St. Joseph’s Health for the past 40 years. He is Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine, Nutley. Dr. McInerney and his partners are team physicians for 24 high schools and, for the last 25 years, for the NJ Jackals baseball team at Yogi Berra Stadium. He was team physician for Seton Hall University and Montclair State University for the past 35 years. He was appointed a U.S. Olympic research associate, team physician, Elite Athlete Project member and team physician at multiple National Olympic Sports Festivals. As Medical Director for USA Olympic and National Team Handball Teams, he was team physician at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles (1984), Barcelona (1992) and Atlanta (1996); the Goodwill Games in Moscow, USSR (1986), Seattle (1990) and St. Petersburg, Russia (1994) and Pan Am Games (1987). He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and has lectured and been a visiting professor at numerous institutions and meetings.

Dr. McInerney is president and founding member of the NJ Orthopaedic Institute and conducts an active sports medicine practice. The driving force in his career is injury prevention and performance enhancement through proprioception, telemovement and neuromuscular dynamics in conjunction with Robert Narcessian, his director of dynamical systems and Mike Decker, Ph.D., Rocky Mountain Consortium for Sports Research.

• Dr. McInerney’s other leadership awards and accolades include: American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), Hall of Fame inductee (July 2021, Nashville, Tenn.), the only one in New Jersey to receive this honor.

• Chairman, AOSSM Fellowship Match Committee (2015 – 2018).

• Member, AOSSM Research, Education, Young Educators and Council of Delegates Committees.

• Eastern Athletic Trainers’ Association David G. Moyer Award as Physician of the Year, (May 1994, Philadelphia, Pa.).

• Timothy M. Hosea, M.D. ATSNJ (Athletic Trainer Society of NJ) Physician of the Year Award (2017).

• Educator of the Year, Seton Hall University (1998) and NJ Excellence in Medicine Award (2006) as Physician Educator of the Year for New Jersey.

• Ranawat Award, Eastern Orthopaedic Association (2018) Top Research Award, Palm Beach, Fla.

• AAOS (American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons), Board of Councilors Executive Committee, Chair Bylaws Committee (1999 – 2002).

Dr. Robert M. Palacios

Robert M. Palacios, MD, is board-certified, sports medicine fellowship trained and has specialized in outpatient orthopaedics and sports medicine for over three decades. Originally from New York City, Dr. Palacios received his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York and went on to complete a residency in family medicine. He subsequently pursued a fellowship in nonoperative orthopaedics and sports medicine through Seton Hall University’s graduate school program at St. Joseph Medical Center, in Paterson.

Dr. Palacios has been a team physician for Montclair State University and Seton Hall University for the last 30 years. He is the team physician for many high schools in North Jersey, including Clifton, Butler, Pompton Lakes, West Milford, Kinnelon, DePaul, Verona, Seton Hall Prep, Irvington, Montville, Glen Ridge, Mountain Lakes, Shabazz, Kennedy and Eastside. He is the team physician for the New Jersey Jackals professional baseball team at Yogi Berra Stadium (Can-Am League Champions 1998, 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2019). NCAA Eastern Regional Championship Playoffs Team Physician Men’s Basketball 2011. Master’s Professional Tennis League Tournament Team Physician 1995 – 2000. He has been a member of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the Medical Society of New Jersey (MSNJ) Committee on Medical Aspects of Sports for over 20 years. Dr. Palacios’s accomplishments include being the recipient of the Medical Teacher of the Year award from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine; American Academy of Family Physicians; National Teaching Awardee 1998, 2002, 2006. Physician of the Year for Boy Scouts of America Northern NJ Chapter; Team Physician, of NJ Juggernauts Professional Softball Team (League Champions 2004); NJ Outlaws Professional Hockey Team (Federation Hockey League Champions 2012); and Team Physician for NJ Imperials Professional Developmental Soccer Team of the NY/NJ Metro Stars.

He has appeared on numerous major television networks and has lectured widely on sports medicine injury prevention and treatment.

Dr. Palacios specializes in nonoperative treatment of the ankle, knee, hip, elbow, shoulder, neck and back. He is skilled at injections of major joints.
