Specializing in high-risk cardiovascular interventions, Dr. Ramzan M. Zakir, MD, RPVI, FACC, FSCAI, of the Heart and Vascular Institute of Central Jersey, is a board-certified interventional cardiologist who employs cutting-edge treatments and technology to achieve the best possible outcomes for his patients.

“What separates me from other cardiologists is that I perform complex, high-risk interventions,’’ Dr. Zakir explained. “I focus on complex coronary and vascular conditions. These cases are higher risk and much more difficult to treat.’’

This includes patients with severely calcified vessels; chronic occlusions, which is a complete blockage of a blood vessel; and other serious conditions.

Founder of the Heart and Vascular Institute of Central Jersey, located in New Brunswick, Dr. Zakir and his dedicated team are committed to providing the highest level of cardiovascular care in the practice’s state-of-the- art facility and at its affiliated hospitals.

The institute provides consultative, preventive, diagnostic, clinical and interventional cardiology and is one of the few practices to offer patient-centered medication management called pharmacogenomics, which helps improve patient outcomes.

“We believe in treating every patient like they are a member of our family,’’ Dr. Zakir said. “I take a lot of time getting to know all of my patients. We believe in developing a strong relationship with our patients based on compassion, mutual respect and understanding.”

A New Jersey native, Dr. Zakir attended Rutgers University and completed both his internship and residency at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School. He won the Department of Medicine Research award and several other recognitions for his commitment to achieving advancements in the field of medicine.

Dr. Zakir is known for his contributions to prominent medical publications, is invited faculty at several prestigious national conferences and lectures, and frequently lectures across the globe.

From 2011 to 2016, Dr. Zakir was director of transradial catheterization at Robert Wood Johnson, where he successfully performed more than 1,000 procedures and taught other cardiologists how to safely execute this procedure, used to diagnose and treat certain heart conditions, through the wrist.

Dr. Zakir serves as the director of high-risk PCI and Research at RWJ University Hospital. PCI stands for Percutaneous Coronary Intervention and is a nonsurgical procedure that uses a catheter to place a stent to open blood vessels in the heart that have been narrowed by plaque buildup, a condition known as atherosclerosis.

A clinical associate professor of medicine at Rutgers Medical School, Dr. Zakir is widely known for his distinct contributions to prominent medical publications. He is invited faculty at several prestigious conferences and lectures throughout the country. He also frequently lectures across the globe.

“I enjoy educating other physicians in how to perform these complex procedures to help improve patient outcomes across our country and the world,’’ he said.

Regular breast screenings linked to highest cure rates, most treatment options, notes Trinitas physician

Dr. Clarissa Febles Henson, chair of radiation oncology at Trinitas Regional Medical Center, which operates the Connie Dwyer Breast Center in Elizabeth, prepares a patient for an Accuboost treatment. The accuracy and noninvasiveness of AccuBoost allows early-stage breast cancer patients who have undergone a lumpectomy to retain more healthy breast tissue, thus making a significant difference in patient outcomes.

When breast cancer is detected early, treatment tends to be less lengthy and less invasive and the chances for survival are vastly improved.

That is why regular screenings are an imperative part of women’s regular health care, according to Dr. Clarissa Febles Henson, chair of radiation oncology at Trinitas Regional Medical Center, which operates the Connie Dwyer Breast Center in Elizabeth.

The American Cancer Society recommends that all women over the age of 40 have regular breast exams and mammograms. The frequency of and specific age to get these screenings depends on risk factors for breast cancer, such as personal and family medical history.

Screening may include documentation of personal and family medical history, physical examinations, radiological studies, such as mammography and breast ultrasonography, and genetic testing.

“It’s also important to check your own breasts,’’ Dr. Henson advised. “There are rare occasions when a cancer may not be picked up on a mammogram. It is important for women to know their breasts and bring any findings of their own exams to their doctor’s attention.’’

Staffed with board-certified bilingual specialists, including doctors, technicians, patient advocates and other professionals, the collaborative team at The Connie Dwyer Breast Center is dedicated to providing excellent, compassionate health care to all people, especially those who are poor and vulnerable.

Early-stage cancer is defined as stage 0 or 1 and means the tumor is still relatively small and the cancer has not spread to the lymph nodes.

“With early detection, you not only have the highest cure rates, you also have the most treatment options,’’ Dr. Henson explained. “With early-stage breast cancer, surgeons can more often remove the tumor while preserving the breast.’’

These patients also tend to need shorter bouts of radiation treatment.

“The radiation fields are typically smaller and a shorter course of radiation therapy is usually indicated,’’ Dr. Henson explained. “That means less toxicity to the normal breast and to normal tissues in the lung, ribs and heart. Less radiation also means fewer side effects. Depending on the patient’s age and stage of cancer, some patients may be a candidate for as little as five to 10 days of radiation, so it’s even shorter the sooner it’s detected.’’

The Connie Dwyer Breast Center offers state-of-the-art equipment and services. Staffed with board-certified bilingual specialists, including doctors, technicians, patient advocates and other professionals, this collaborative team is dedicated to providing excellent, compassionate health care to all people, especially those who are poor and vulnerable.

Using full-field digital mammography with computer-aided detection; 3D mammography, which allows radiologists to view the breast in several layers; and high-resolution breast ultrasound, the center offers the latest technology to aid in early detection of breast cancer.

“The 3D mammogram decreases the need for patients to come back for a second screening,’’ Dr. Henson explained. “It is more accurate and leads to fewer call-back rates for further testing.’’

In addition to screening services, the center performs surgical biopsy, breast MRI, offers education and support programs and genetic counseling. While most women who undergo breast screenings are healthy, if a screen uncovers something suspicious, the center connects patients with a “Breast Navigator,” who guides the patient through the entire breast care process, including arranging appointments with the appropriate specialists at the center.

Dr. Henson urges women not to delay screenings because of concerns about COVID-19. At Trinitas facilities, including the cancer center, all precautions are taken to keep patients and staff safe.

Dr. Henson urges women not to delay screenings because of concerns about COVID-19.

“Sadly, statistics do show that during the pandemic people were presenting with more advanced cancer,’’ Dr. Henson said. “We know that early detection improves survival rates. During the pandemic, not going to the doctor did not fare well for people. It is very important that we get back to our routines.’’

At Trinitas facilities, including the cancer center, all precautions are taken to keep patients and staff safe, including screening for symptoms, mandatory vaccinations for staff, social distancing and deep cleaning of the waiting and exam rooms and imaging suites.

“It is definitely safe to come and get your mammogram here at Connie Dwyer,’’ Dr. Henson said. “We are here to help women receive the screenings they need that can vastly improve treatment options and survival rates. Don’t delay. Annual breast screenings save lives.’’

Escape to the Jersey Cape for a whimsical getaway filled with year-round fun

Don’t miss out on a moment of the off-season fun. Plan your next escape at the Jersey Cape, and enjoy everything Cape May County has to offer all year long.

The locals’ secret is out. Many famous Cape May County attractions stay open way beyond Labor Day. Fewer crowds, discounted admissions, shorter wait times and unique holiday celebrations are just some of the reasons to savor a magical off-season escape to the Jersey Cape.

Take advantage of smaller crowds, and enjoy a quiet stroll while cradling a warm cup of coffee on the charming Ocean City Boardwalk. Stop by Shriver’s, serving saltwater taffy and fudge since 1898, for a nostalgic sweet treat while experiencing the boardwalk’s famous attractions. Or kick off your holiday celebration with a festive horse and carriage ride, an entertaining train show and say hello to Santa Claus. Then, relive an old-fashioned Christmas at the Miracle on Asbury Street and Winterfest by the Sea celebrations.

A few miles south, rent bikes at Isle Bicycles and enjoy an excursion along scenic Pleasure Avenue in Sea Isle City. If you’re hungry afterward, own your Shoobie nickname and savor farm-to-table eats, like the Jersey Shore Breakfast Sammie or a Smoked Turkey BLT at the Shoobie’s Bright Spot Café.

Monarch butterflies are frequently spotted in Cape May County, and Stone Harbor’s Wetlands Institute is the place to see them in all their beauty.

Seven Mile Island is delighted to welcome visitors for its most festive time of year. Stone Harbor kicks off the sensational holiday season with a jaw-dropping Christmas Parade. Elaborately decorated holiday floats roll down 96th street, and an authentic Mr. and Mrs. Claus wave to patrons from their horse-drawn sleigh. If you’re looking for an immersive educational experience, Stone Harbor’s Wetlands Institute is home to a host of native wildlife, offering public nature programs, seasonal science activities, exciting animal encounters, amusing outdoor games and an elevated marsh walkway perfect for birdwatching and spotting sea life.

Wander 5 miles of soft sand on Wildwood’s massive beaches any time of year. Or maybe, instead of beachcombing, you’d rather try out surfing or stand-up paddleboarding while the water is still warm. Visit the popular Kona Surf Co. on Rio Grande Avenue for customized handcrafted, shaped and painted fiberglass boards, softer starter boards and the best surfing merchandise available. Once you’re finished riding the waves, don’t forget to stop by the world-famous Wildwood Boardwalk, where the Gateway 26 Arcade is open year-round and thrilling rides whip and whirl well into October.

If you’re on the way to Cape May, America’s oldest seaside resort, celebrate Halloween with a ghost tour trolley ride and learn why spirits don’t ever want to leave this magnificent city. If trollies aren’t your thing, choose from a lineup of delicious mystery dinners, eerie walking tours and live productions to get you in the spooky mood. Or if you’d rather be jolly instead of jumpy, check out all Cape May has to offer this holiday season. Hop on a Winter Wonderland holiday train ride, savor the Twelve Days of Christmas in Cape May Walking Tours, or dine in a winter igloo on Congress Hall’s Grand Lawn overlooking the glistening Atlantic Ocean.

While you’re in Cape May, grab some good eats at the Lobster House, which allows guests the chance to dine on a docked ship overlooking nautical views.

Explore the southernmost tip of the island to hunt for dazzling Cape May diamonds while unforgettable sunsets spill across the sky at Sunset Beach. Afterward, stop by Sunset Beach Gifts and see how area artists use Cape May diamonds to create exquisite jewelry and handmade crafts.

Hayrides, corn mazes and pumpkin picking aren’t usually what come to mind when you imagine a trip down the Shore, but you can do all that and more at Beach Plum Farm and Legates Farm Market. Later, gather around a campfire, roast s’mores and sip hot cocoa at Holly Shores Camping Resort or Ocean View Resort Campground.

Don’t miss out on a moment of the off-season fun. Plan your next escape at the Jersey Cape, and enjoy everything Cape May County has to offer all year long.
